healthy home tips

Our goal at ecostore is to make it easier for you to have a healthy home so here are a few tips and ideas on ways that you can start making a difference.

Reuse:

  • Shopping bags are available in many supermarkets and gift shops for a range of prices depending on how upmarket you want to go. Some cleverly fold down into a small purse size bundle that easily fits in your handbag so you don't get caught short at the supermarket.
  • Take-away coffee cups - refillable options are a great way to go.
  • Water bottles - most are designed to be used once and then recycled but a more sustainable
option is to get a bottle that lasts and refill it. (steel ones are good for this).
  • Water filter - if your water supply is chlorinated or has other problems then a water filter is a good investment. You can get portable bench-top models with a rubber hose that fits over most taps - these are handy if you’re flatting. An under-bench model that's plumbed in is convenient if you're more settled.
  • Rechargeable Batteries - These do contain heavy metals e.g nickel cadmium but are still a better option than single use batteries.

Reduce:

  • One of the biggest challenges here is to consume less. It's the best way to reduce waste.
  • You can also buy in bulk and opt for concentrated products as both these options require less packaging.
  • Join a Library. Borrow books instead of buying them new or browse your local secondhand book stores. Donate old books to hospice shops.
  • Go paperless. Get all your bank and utility statements online. Don't print emails.

Plastic Bags

When you think that a plastic bag is used for an average of 20 minutes but takes about 500 years to break down in landfill a reuseable shopping bag makes a small but significant impact.

Reduce

Consuming less is the best way to reduce waste. Other things you can do are buy in bulk and buy concentrated products as both these options require less packaging.
